Description

Apologies for the lack of pictures this time around, it ended up being sort of a frustrating build and I forgot.

I wanted to mess with memory without the effective limitation of fclk/gear 1 again and ddr5 was a chance to do that. I got a decent combo deal on the Apex and ram and picked up a 12700kf and Kraken Z73 to go along with it (I didn't have a lga1151/1200/1700 block and I'm kinda over custom loops anyway, so I needed a new cooler). The first Z73 that I got ended up breaking in shipping, one of the tubes popped off the pump block and leaked all over the inside of the box. It was only a matter of time before I got something that was broken, I guess. Also making an appearance is the Hyte Y60; I've been searching for a replacement for my beat-up o11 dynamic for a long time and this is probably the best so far. It's a tight squeeze with a 200mm psu, but it's a really nice show case. Temps are good now that I've got the proper mounting bracket, the tubes are a little more stretched than I'd have liked but it's the only orientation I could get the block and rad to fit. It seems like my imc isn't happy with 6400mt/s, even loosening the xmp results in errors.... however, 6200 cl30 appears stable. Still working on tightening things.

Part Reviews

CPU

Most of the performance of a 12900k for half the heat. Mine's SP82 overall with SP97 p-cores.

CPU Cooler

It's annoying to have to use cam for this but there's no way around it. The screen is pretty convenient though and as an aio it's fine.

Motherboard

Removing a star because Asus messed up early production runs of this board, mine included.

Memory

I'm going to give the ram the benefit of the doubt and assume my imc is the limiting factor. Currently running 6200 cl30.

Update: my Apex is a first batch model and that is the limiting factor...

Case

Love the design! So far the gpu being vertical hasn't noticeably impacted temperatures. My (petty) gripes are that there could be slightly more cable management space and you can only install a 360mm radiator with the tubing facing the front of the case which could be an issue for some.

That case is honestly one of the best I've ever seen and the parts choice fits it very well. Nice build well done.

Great build! First build I've taken a look at in this case, looks great! I've always loved the displays on AIOs too :P

A bit unnecessary don't you think? It's still cool though!

The psu and 3090 definitely are; I wish I had gone with a 3080ti instead but it's not worth switching now.

Just a bit curious, really like the case but of course its tempered all around, is there any issues with the temp, and how are the noise levels on this bad boy?

Steroids

Noise is about the same as my old o11 dynamic, it really depends on the type of fans you use as well as your fan curve. Temps are surprisingly fine, I expected the 3090 to choke a little but because there are two 120mm fans directly underneath it pulling air from outside the case it's been pretty good. I don't have stress test numbers, but with the settings cranked in both elden ring and runescape 3, it hasn't surpassed 60c. The cpu also runs pretty cool compared to the 5950x I had previously- at stock, the idle temp is ~28c and it reaches ~70c in cinebench r23.

Cool build I am using the Hyte as well any tips you wish you would have known before you started a build in the case? And one more thing is DDR5 6400 worth it, I am barely in the buy phase of all the components and I just need a few things and among them is the ram and I was thinking DDR5 5600 that or 6200 what are your thoughts. Ty in advance

If you're using an aio, the end of the radiator that the tubes come out of is probably going to have to face the front of the case and if it's a 360mm radiator it's going to be a tight squeeze. Cable management room isn't as spacious as I expected, if you've got long cables it might be a struggle to tuck them away.
It's not worth getting higher end ddr5 at the moment, it's still in its infancy and any current high end kits are going to be overshadowed as time goes on. I only have a 6400mhz kit because it was bundled with the motherboard. I would recommend getting the cheapest thing over 5600mhz for now, only because that means you won't end up with Micron chips- their ddr5 is struggling to keep up with Samsung and SKHynix currently.

6200c30? that's insane, do you have anything like an aida64 or intel mlc run? and what did you stability test with?

Steroids
  • 2 years 9 months ago

I'll post the full timings and an Aida run when I get home. I use TM5 Anta777 profile and Karhu (for longer overnight testing). The problem with these dimms is that the trcd/trp won't come down at all, it throws errors with anything below 40.

ah ok, so it is actually pretty stable and wasn't tested with something like aida64's bandwidth test, nice! that's a hell of an oc, dropping cl by 10 ticks like that

Steroids

Here are the full timings and here is the Aida result. The latency is subpar because it's not running 1t, I haven't had the time to stabilize that yet.

looks pretty nice, nearly 100gb/s and some good secondaries

do you have to vertically mount it? or can u take the riser out and normally put a gpu in

Steroids
  • 2 years 8 months ago

It pretty much needs to be vertically mounted, the horizontal pcie slots are half the normal height (to make room for the vertical slots) so you wouldn't be able to screw in your gpu horizontally.
