Adding Custom Part Prices And Marking Parts As Purchased

philip

May 2, 2013

I have just rolled out new functionality that allows you to enter custom part prices, mark parts as purchased, and keep inventory of the parts you own.

When adding parts to your part list, you can customize the price information displayed by clicking on the arrow button next to the price.

Custom Part Price Button

Clicking on the custom price button pulls up the following dialog:

Custom Part Price Dialog

For each part, you can:

  • Choose the cheapest available price
  • Override to show price from a specific retailer
  • Import purchase price from your inventory
  • Enter your own purchase price manually, and optionally add it to your inventory

User inventory is a "new" feature that lets you track what parts you already own. You can view them all in a single page (similar to favorites), and can enter in purchase prices for each item. You can also view current prices, and add them to your part list directly from the inventory page. When adding from your inventory, it will automatically apply your purchase price for that part.

In addition to all of this, saved and completed builds will also retain the custom part price information. If you want to show how much you paid for your completed build instead of current prices, just edit your part list to include the custom pricing and save back into your completed build.

Wow, Philip, you're making PCPartPicker an online computer build journal with the inventory and price management! There is truly no website that compares to this!

Incredible stuff. Great work! The inventory is something I had not even envisaged but it interacts so well.

I hate to be That Guy following up the praise with building block ideas but the only two improvements I would make is to change (Purchased) to just a (lighter grey) "P" or something - especially when looking at a completely purchased saved build the "(Purchased)" bits next to every price make the prices harder to read.

The other improvement is that I still feel there is a need for switching between purchase and current prices. I am very interested in knowing "what would I pay now?", both on a short term (did I just get a good deal?) and long term basis. I think it's also going to still appeal to other users (e.g. this build looks great, I'm going to use this as a start point for mine).

And finally - is it ok to overwrite complete builds with a new saved part list including all purchased prices? All comments retained etc.?

A bug I think. http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/b/BNB - this is the first completed build with fully purchased prices. The total though reads £0.00 - it's not working. I also tried removing the "uk." subdomain from URL but that still says $0.00.

Could possibly be due to the fact one of the prices is listed (accidentally I assume) as -$0.01, did that kill the totalling function somehow? Plus of course if all prices are listed purchased in $ then the total should be $ (hopefully with conversion) too regardless of my location.

Ok, got the 0.00 bug fixed, so that should be ok now. Part of that was a mismatch of currencies. It used to balk if the total included prices from two different currencies (as the internals don't know how to convert them based on market rates yet). Now it'll just add up the totals for each currency and display those separately if they are from a different region.

Please don't hesitate to offer suggestions - I'm more than happy to hear them. I can definitely look into reducing the verbage for "Purchased". I agree it makes it harder to read. I'll experiment with a ligher font, just a P, and maybe a few other things to see what looks best. For the mix of current and purchase prices - I had tried a few variations that included both, but never settled on a presentation that I liked. I finally hit a point where I felt like I just needed to get the feature out, so the combo of both isn't in there right now. I'll keep messing with it though - hopefully find something that works and isn't an eyesore.

And it's totally fine to overwrite complete builds with a new part list. All the comments will be retained. Only the part list changes.

Definitely a bug on the -0.01 price. I'll look into the currency mismatch. Hmmm...

Is there a way to mark a custom part as purchased? I can't figure out how to add it to my inventory. Thanks.

Can you add a option for 'Mark as Purchased' without Manual pricing?

This looks amazing, I should finally be able to add the custom pricing from Eclipse and repost my build once I get my new motherboard (Z77A-GD65 Gaming (; )

Wow what a great addition! And great timing, too! One nice tweak would be to enable or disable including the purchased items in the current price - for example, I've bought a 650D for $151 and an AX850 for $130, but when I have them in the list as "purchased" the price still goes towards my total. I actually think the best way of remedying this, to kill two birds with one stone, is "Total price" and "Price remaining," meaning how much you still have to spend on parts.

The irony, eh? :) I'd probably run a hackintosh, but I can't risk having an update take my dev box out of commission even for a little bit. If it wasn't OS X though, I'd be running Linux (ran it for ages, but prefer the consistency of the OS X UI). It's no fun doing dev for a unix-based site on windows.

Is there a way that you can make it so that after you show that you purchased the part that it said something like "How much more money to go"

  • 1 point

This is fantastic. I was recently ordering parts and wondering why there wasn't a way to save the prices you paid for each part--I ended up recording them all in an Excel spreadsheet. Now I'm putting the prices back into pcpartpicker and my obsession for accuracy is met! Next time I order parts it will be even easier, as I can just click to add the price from the place I bought it.

Is there a way to change the vendor you bought your item from in the inventory? I added some items with a custom price to the inventory, but it says I purchased the items from incorrect vendors.

[EDIT] The vendor I was looking at was the vendor with the lowest price. I misunderstood what that column was for. Anyway it would still be a bit helpful to be able to record where you bought an item from in your inventory.
