Recently got into PC gaming after about a 15 year break. My home pc wasn't cutting it, so I decided to buy a gaming rig. I checked prices on sites like Dell (Alienware) and Falcon Northwest. The cost of the higher end rigs blew me away. I decided I would build one myself and try and save some money.

A few notes - before I decided to build I thought I would just upgrade the video card in my old pc. I bought a PNY Nvidia Geforce GTX 1050ti at my local best buy for $199. It didn't really help my performance much so I went back to Best Buy and was looking at the gaming rigs when I started talking to the salesman. He encouraged me to build my own gaming rig. He told me about this website and the research began. I decided a budget build was best for me. (As you will see that changed the further I got along)

The first component I bought was the motherboard. Now remember at this point It was still a budget build, so I went with the MSI B350 Tomahawk. I was planning to get a Ryzen 5 2600 as my processor. As I was waiting for the motherboard to arrive, I started reading lots of reviews. Some of the reviews said that a bios update was required before using any of the second gen Ryzen processors and that a first gen processor was required first to update the bios. That's why I got the Ryzen 3 1200. The motherboard already had the Bios update so really I could have gone with the new processor. My plan is to upgrade that soon, although the Ryzen 3 is working great. Also as parts began to roll in (and I continued to research parts) I decided to upgrade the video card to a 1080ti. At this point it's no longer a budget build. I still plan to use the CPU and 1050ti when I build a budget gaming rig for my son. Also, I plan to add some more fans with red LED and maybe a liquid cooler for the cpu. Just have to get some more $$$ first.

Part Reviews

CPU

Upgraded to this from the Ryzen 3 1200. I like it but it runs hot with the stock cooler. Idle temps were 39° C and under load was getting to high 70's. I replaced the cooler with a Corsair liquid cooler and temps went down dramatically. Many others recommended just using a better air cooler which apparently works great too.

CPU Cooler

Works great and was easier to install than the stock cooler. Keeps my cpu at 26° C when idle. I also like that I can change the color of the Corsair logo to red to match the rest of my build.

Motherboard

So far I like it just fine. When I ordered it I read some reviews that said some motherboards need a bios update to work with 2nd gen Ryzen processors. When it arrived the box had a sticker that said Ryzen 2000 ready. It turns out it had a bios update that included support for the newer cpu's already.

Memory

Works great! With XMP profile 2 set in Bios it clocks in at 3200. The red heatsinks go with my Black and Red color scheme.

Storage

Windows boots fast and load times are fast.

Storage

I added this for extra storage.

Video Card

Works great. All games I've loaded run at least 60 FPS at 1080p.

Case

Cable management is great. It's a lot bigger and heavier than I expected though.

Power Supply

Works great. I like the fully modular design. Makes cable management easy.

I seen this and was scared that your paired a Ryzen 3 1200 with a 1080 ti and were gonna keep it. Glad I read your story to this build.

Yeah no worries, I will be upgrading the processor soon. I have read a lot of reviews and watched some videos on how the Ryzen 3 bottlenecks.

Your overclocking problem might be that you’re using the stock cooler. The Wraith Stealth, which the 2600 comes with, only has a rated TDP of 65W. It won’t cool a 6-core cpu as well as something like the Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo or the be quiet! Pure Rock Slim, both of which are $30 or less. If you really want a good overclock for maximum performance, don’t forget to consider a decent 240mm or 280mm liquid cooler. Also, if you haven’t tried it already, increase the voltage of your CPU in the motherboard BIOS. I’m not very familiar with Ryzen overclocking, so I would look up a recommendation for how much you should increase it.

The Corsair Hydro series are all good, and for 240mm I would recommend the H100i v2, but it’s a little spendy at $105 a pop currently. Try doing a little research and see what you can come up with.

PLZ take down your 3-star review for the Ryzen 5 2600. It deserves much better, and you shouldn't expect to be able to overclock at all with a stock cooler. Whatever you saw about a 4.1 GHz clock speed definitely uses an air cooler.

What are the temps on your CPU?

With the liquid cooler my temps have gone down to as low as 26 idle. That's down from about 38. I decided not to overclock this processor (for the time being) because its doing just fine as is. The stock cooler is not good. I was reluctant to install a liquid cooler at first because I thought it would be difficult. It was much easier than installing the stock cooler.
